UK College of Engineering @ Paducah

November 2022

Happy Friday! In this month’s edition of UK-Paducah Points of Pride, we are celebrating

Women in Engineering!

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is the world's largest advocate and catalyst for change for women in engineering and technology. This year, we had 5 women

from our campus attended the SWE National Conference in Houston, TX.

National Data: According to the Society of Women Engineers, only 14% of engineers are women. National breakdown for the degrees we offer:

  • 19% of Chemical Engineers
  • 9% of Mechanical Engineers

22%

of UK-Paducah students identify as female.

SWE’s 8th Annual

Death by Chocolate Event

On November 10, our SWE Chapter hosted their 8th Annual Death by Chocolate Event sponsored by Arkema Inc. This event was designed for middle and high school women interested in STEM. It allowed for students to network, enjoy lots of desserts, and hear stories from current female engineers.

SARAH QUARLES

Mechanical Engineering Senior

Meet Sarah Quarles. Sarah graduated from St. Mary High School. As a Senior, she has taken advantage of all the opportunities afforded to her. She has served in multiple leadership roles, including Society of Women Engineers (Treasurer), Society of Automotive Engineers (Secretary), Engineers for Sustainable World (Vice President), and Kentucky Energy Club (Vice President). On the career service side, Sarah completed a one-year Co-Op in 2020, where she gained experience with Ingevity. She was able to work in two locations – Wickliffe, Kentucky

and Waynesboro, Georgia.

In partnership with the non-profit, Empowered Solutions for Environmental Sustainability, Sarah traveled with classmates to train people on how to use the plastic-to-fuel reactor. She has been able to study abroad in Nepal and twice made the trip to Uganda.

Sarah is currently working as an intern with Evonik in Calvert City. She recently attended the Engineering and Computer Science Fair in Lexington and is exploring her options for employment upon graduation in May 2023.

SAVANNAH MURT

Chemical Engineering Freshman

Meet Savannah Murt. Savannah graduated with Honors from McCracken County High School as a valedictorian. Throughout middle and high school, Savannah was involved in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classes. She enjoyed the experiential learning and processing information in a fresh way. She went on to complete the Engineering Pathway at MCHS – shout out to Brian Gill!

Savannah’s favorite thing about UK-Paducah is the small class size. It allows her to build closer relationships with faculty and her classmates. She is already making her mark on campus as a leader with her involvement in Society for Women Engineers (SWE) and American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). She credits PLTW, AP Chemistry, and the strong relationships with her fellow Chemical Engineering students for her early success. Savannah’s next step is to explore research opportunities and career options.
