UK Engineering @ Paducah

UK Pigman College of Engineering – Paducah Campus and their role to making Kentucky more competitive in the automotive industry.

By the Numbers // Kentucky + Auto

  • Kentucky is the #1 producer of cars, light trucks, and SUVs per capita.
  • 550+ automotive-related facilities in KY.
  • $22.6 billion announced investments in automotive-related facilities since 2014.
  • 1 out of every 18 workers in U.S. automotive industry work in KY.
  • See attachment for Kentucky Metals Industry full report.

In the Classroom // Automotive Production

  • 90% of UK Paducah Mechanical Engineering (ME) May 2023 graduates earned the Automotive Production Engineering Certificate (PEC).
  • All PEC courses are team-taught by UK instructors and Toyota Engineers!
  • This year, every ME is working on a capstone design project sponsored by Toyota. Students meet with their engineering team sponsors on a bi-weekly basis.

New to the Team

Dr. Huayi Li joined our faculty in August 2023. Before arriving in Paducah, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Texas A&M and has 3 years of industry experience with Toyota. Her research focuses on autonomous vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, robots, and controls. To learn more about her research, visit her Google Scholar Page.

Blue Oval SK Connection

There is a lot of buzz in the state about the Blue Oval SK site outside Elizabethtown, KY. As the $5.6 billion battery and vehicle manufacturing campus gears up, there are some familiar UK-Paducah faces on the team. Matt Byrn (2013) and Chad Yung Kim (2014) are on the engineering team.

Matt, a Graves County native, moved to Detroit in 2013 to start his career with Ford. In that time, he specialized in tooling, advanced manufacturing, and has been the lead process engineer for multiple projects. Matt is excited to return to KY as the Maintenance Team Manager. He is helping to lay the foundation of healthy culture and implement standards for the factory’s full launch in January 2025. Click here to learn more about Blue Oval SK.

Toyota Highlight

We have numerous alumni who have or currently work for Toyota. One of them is Kyle Ramey (2008). During his time at UK-Paducah, Kyle was the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) President and received the SAE Outstanding Student Leadership Award. His first major project assignment at Toyota was to help develop an all-new Highlander which required multiple trips to Japan. He currently serves as a Body Weld Engineering Manager at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana located in Princeton, IN where they produce the Toyota Highlander, Toyota Grand Highlander, Toyota Sienna and Lexus TX models.

Summer in Smyrna

Evan Bremmerkamp (Mechanical Engineering Senior) worked this summer with Nissan Motor Corporation in Smyrna, TN. He will continue with them over Winter Break. Evan was responsible for overseeing the production equipment in the trim & chassis area as the maintenance engineering intern.

Women in Engineering Day (WiE Day)

Our Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosted their first WiE Day on November 17. We are grateful for Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership for sponsoring the event. It was designed for junior and senior high school women who are interested in STEM. SWE shared their experience as women studying engineering followed by a panel of professional engineers who shared about their careers in the field.
