Snapshot of what’s happening on UK Pigman College of Engineering – Paducah Campus!

$70M Received from the Department of Energy

ISP Chemicals LLC, an Ashland Co., is engaging in conversations with DOE to build industrial-size thermal battery plants and UK-Paducah has played a key role in helping bring this significant economic development project to the region. The full-scale, industrial-size “thermal battery” is the first of its kind and researchers and students at the UK Paducah will help conduct the design and analysis of the integrated system, including structural analysis, computational fluid dynamics analysis, thermal transient system analysis, etc. To learn more, check out Governor Beshear’s Announcement.

Mini-Rockets and E-Week

This year in celebration of Engineering Week (last week of February), we visited the Oscar Cross Boys & Girls Club! Each student built a straw rocket and competed against their grade level for a 3D-printed trophy which was printed in our maker space. The overall winner – a 3rd grader who launched their rocket 28 feet! For reference, the winning middle schooler rocket went 17 feet. We had a blast!

Winners of their grade division showing off their new 3D-printed trophies created by Chandler Christ (UK-Paducah, freshman).

Evening with Engineering

E-Week was busy as we also welcomed nearly 30 prospective students and their families for our annual Evening with Engineering. The students were able to meet Dean Buchheit, learn about research/internship opportunities, and meet our faculty.

Ford Motor Company

Ford Motor Company, along with a group of 13 leaders from universities, community colleges, and governmental officials from TN and KY, visited the UK Pigman College of Engineering Paducah Campus to learn more about the partnership with WKCTC and UK. Ford Motor Company and its partner are in the process of building three massive battery plants, two in central Kentucky and one in western Tennessee, which will create nearly 11,000 new jobs. They desperately need finding creative ways to fill those technical positions and are interested in university-community college partnerships. UK Paducah is at the middle of these two locations and is looking forward to further collaborations with Ford!

A local panel shares about the UK-Paducah program. (L-R) Kate Senn (WKCTC), Anton Reese (WKCTC), Sandra Wilson (Paducah Area Chamber), Rudy Buchheit (UK), Jennifer McIntosh (UK), Charles Lu (UK).

Impactful Role in STEM Education

The Army Educational Outreach Program highlighted our very own Dr. Gisella Lamas for her impact on STEM Education. Dr. Lamas is an Ambassador for eCYBERMISSION and has served as a Virtual Judge for their competitions. For the full article, visit AEOP.

Research on Advanced Materials

Dr. Madhav Baral recently organized a symposium at the International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG) Conference in Melbourne, Australia and was published in the International Journal of Plasticity. Dr. Baral and Dr. Charles Lu also served as Guest Editors for the Journal of Materials. His research focuses on ductile fracture, a key cause of material failure. For more about his research, visit here.
